Cat food, dog food, PLB International

PLB International, previously known as L.B. Products Ltd., was founded by Jean-Marie Brasseur. The Company began operations in Upton, Québec, Canada in 1969. At that time, the Company processed a raw ingredient for farm animal feed, and its main clients were Québec mill operators who used this ingredient in the preparation of animal feed.

In 1979, the Company moved to Boucherville on Montreal's South Shore so that it would be closer to its markets.

In 1981, Jean-Marie Brasseur recognized the opportunity presented by dog and cat food market, and decided to become the first Québec producer in this industry.

In 1982, the new Boucherville plant produced its first pet foods.

The Company experienced sustained sales growth between 1982 and 1990, and continuously increased its production capacity.

1990 marked the emergence of 1st Choice, a brand new line of dry food for dogs and cats. This was the first high-end pet food in North America to use fresh chicken in its formulas, which placed 1st Choice in competition with Iams and Science Diet with its three formulas for dogs and one for cats.

This new variety of products was developed by the L.B. Products Research and Development Department, in collaboration with Dr. James E. Corbin, an internationally recognized leader in the pet food industry.

In 1994, L.B. Products continued to expand, as the Company took notice of an untapped niche in the pet food market. There was a demand for a product that was of better quality than commercial foods, but not necessarily of the same standards as products like 1st Choice, which could be offered at an intermediate price. Taking this into consideration, the Company launched the Pronature brand.

At the same time, the Sales Department took steps to penetrate the European market. However, it was following a trade mission to Japan that we secured our first international client for our 1st Choice products, marketed under the English name on the international market.

Success on the European market was quickly realized and included the Pronature brand, which was positioned in the same segment as Iams products.

Buoyed by its explosive sales, and in order to respond to the increasing need, the Company invested several million dollars in new production equipment and in the expansion of its facilities in 1995. This investment also made it possible to improve the accuracy of the production and control systems.

Faced with market evolution and innovation in the area of animal nutrition, the time came for 1st Choice to renew its image. In light of this, in 1996, the formulas were modified to create the 2nd generation of high end products. This 2nd generation included omega 3 and omega 6, as well as natural anti?oxidants.

The Company changed its name in 2001. The new name better represents what the Company has become, and is more relevant to the clients and markets that we serve. From that time on, the Company would be known as PLB International Inc.

In 2001, PLB also improved its Pronature products by adding herbs and natural preservatives.

In the fall of 2001, the Company launched the new image for its 1st Choice products with national distributors and international partners. From that moment, these products were marketed under the 1st Choice name, which was previously used internationally, featuring multilingual packaging that was globally distributed. In addition to broadening the 1st Choice selection in response to the specific requirements of small, medium, and large breeds, the Company again improved the nutritional qualities of its products. Ever since then, the 1st Choice – Super premium formulas have contained a blend of natural anti-oxidants that are specially developed to strengthen the animal's immune system.

The same year, the Company's founding president, Jean-Marie Brasseur, retired. His children, Jacinthe, Jean, and Jocelyn, who were already corporate managers, became the new owners. Jocelyn took over as President of PLB International, Jacinthe became Vice-President, Administration, and Jean became Vice-President, Operations.

In 2002, PLB International was the first North American dog and cat food manufacturer to earn the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification, an internationally recognized system that consists of a straightforward yet powerful set of principles for controlling food safety.

In October 2003, PLB International was declared to be in compliance with the new EC1774 / 2002 regulation, which was issued by the European Parliament and European Union Council. PLB is the first Canadian plant to receive the Canadian Food Inspection Agency certification. One of the certification requirements is control over production parameters through the HACCP approach.

Today, PLB International has approximately 110 employees and more than 50 commercial partners in over twenty countries across four continents. The Company produces superior quality dry food for dogs and cats that is highly competitive on the global market.
